All Heart – Mothers Day Quilt and Pattern

All Heart, Mothers Day quilt and pattern.

I’m excited.  I just came up with this new project idea.

It would be fair to say I’ve had an interest in hearts for a long time.

I’ve had in mind recently to make another rag style quilt and had been thinking about fabric and colours.  I was also very keen to try Jo Cline’s butter knife technique.  In this technique she rubs a butter knife over the raw edges of the quilt once they have been sewn together and after clipping.  This quickly enables the fraying process, in conjunction with washing.

Then I began to think about Mothers Day coming and flowers.  I woke up very early one morning with the epiphany! Of course I would make a rag quilt, in the shape of a heart, with flowers. What could be nicer for any Mum or lady at the end of the day to sit under a cuddly heart shaped lap quilt with flowers and a nice cup of tea?

As you know I love scrappy quilts and so I decided to make this rag quilt from quilting cottons, so I would have lots of fabrics to choose from in keeping with the Mothers Day theme.

This is not a difficult project and would be suitable for all skill levels.

All fabrics have been washed and gently pressed before beginning.  All seams based on 1/2″ seam allowance unless instructed otherwise.

Ingredients for the All Heart – Mothers Day Quilt

3 metres / yards of gold / cream tone on tone fabric for the backing

Quilting cottons, in dark pinks, light pinks, light greens, cream / golds and brown with floral and rose motifs.  Use at leat 10 fabrics for good variation.

28 x 9″ squares batting
1 x 14″ square of batting

Cutting

From the gold / cream tone on tone fabric, cut
1 x 15″  square
28 x 10″ squares
1 x 2 1/2″ width of fabric strip (optional for fabric rose)
From the assorted quilting cottons cut
28 x 10″ squares
1 x 15″ square of brown floral

1 x 2 1/2″ strip of width of fabric in dark pink (optional for fabric rose)

Method for construction

Layer the 15″ gold cream square right sides down.  Lay the 14″ batting square in the centre.  add the 15″ brown square, right way up.  Pin well.  Find the centre point  at 7 1/2″ in the square and sew from top to bottom on both sides.  Cut the square twice on the diagional to reveal 4 triangles.

This may help.

Clip As You Go Technique

Stack the rest of the 10″ gold cream squares, batting and floral squares, in the same manner.  Pin well each block.

Sew each block from corner to corner.

Assemble 24 of the blocks into four patch blocks, ensuring no 2 blocks the same are next to each other.

Take four of the four patch blocks and sew into a 16 patch block using a 1/2″ seam allowance.

Attach each of the triangle blocks to the remaing single blocks.  Please follow the photo for placement.  Then attached these units to each side of the last 2 four patch blocks.

Attach these two units to to 2 adjacent sides of the 16 patch.

Sew all around the periphery of the quilt 1/2″ from the edge.  Sew a second seam 3/4″ from the edge of the quilt.  Snip all the seams at 1/2″ intervals ensuring not  to cut into the seams.  Rub over the seams with a butter kife or the back of scissors.  Attach a fabric rose if desired.  Wash.

Your quilt is ready to gift……or you may just want to make one for yourself 🙂

To make the fabric rose

Take the cream 2 1/2″ strip, right way up. Top with the pink 2 1/2″ strip, right way up.  Fold into fourths. Cut away three scallops from each side.

Thread a needle with a double thread.  Knot the end well and make a running/gathering stitch beginning and ending 1″ from each end.  Gather up to about 1/2 the length.

Following the stitching line and starting in the upper centre block, machine sew in a circle abutting the strip as close to itself as possible.

  1. Susie, glad you found inspiration. I knew you would! This tutorial gives me a better understanding of rag quilting. Lovely idea for Mother’s day. Laura Crawford

  2. This is a delightful quilt. Like you, I’m a scrappy quilt girl. At the moment I’m piecing a quilt for a challenge and although it will look great when finished, the need for total accuracy causes me great angst. Life is too short💖 For angst🙏
